The scene

London's nightlife is not one scene, it's a dozen overlapping ones — and the bass-led corner of it has been running continuously since the late 1980s. Jungle was assembled here. Drum & bass grew out of it here. Pirate radio gave both a transmitter here before either had a record deal.

That continuity is why a London line-up can still put a selector who was playing in 1991 next to someone who started last year, and have the floor make sense of it. The audience carries the history with them.

Where it happens

The city's electronic music venues run from railway arches and converted industrial spaces to purpose-built clubs. Islington, Hackney, Tottenham and south of the river all carry their own weight, and a night's character has as much to do with the room as the line-up.

Epidemik's own recent events have run at Electrowerkz in Angel Islington — a venue that suits the programming because it has the low ceilings and hard surfaces that bass music was designed for.
