The scene
Manchester's nightlife has a claim to being the most historically important outside London, and unlike a lot of cities it never really had a fallow period. The rave era, the club era and the current scene all connect to each other, and the city has consistently exported both artists and ideas.
The audience is big and it turns out midweek as well as at weekends, which is unusual and makes the city viable for programming that would struggle elsewhere.
Where it happens
The Northern Quarter, Ancoats and the areas around Piccadilly carry much of the late-night activity, with a mix of purpose-built clubs and converted industrial space.
Capacity ranges widely, which means a promoter can build an audience in a small room and scale up in the same city rather than having to move.
