The scene in Leicester

DJ SS started out as a hip hop and rare groove DJ in Leicester before co-founding Formation Records, a label especially prolific between 1991 and 1994 in breakbeat hardcore and jungle. It spawned more than 30 sub-labels and launched artists including Tango and John B, and SS's own 1995 track 'The Lighter' is remembered as a genre landmark.

That history gives Leicester's drum & bass and jungle crowd a real sense of ownership over the genre, rather than treating it as something that just happened to pass through.
