The scene in Edinburgh
Pure launched in 1990 at The Venue, founded by JD Twitch and Brainstorm, and became one of the most influential house and techno nights in the country through the decade it ran - Jeff Mills played his first-ever UK date there, alongside Richie Hawtin and Derrick May. Twitch and Brainstorm went on to found Optimo in Glasgow, but Pure is where that reputation started.
Edinburgh's reputation for the Fringe and Hogmanay can overshadow a genuinely serious underground house and techno scene that's run continuously since Pure's era, carried today by a handful of venues that take the same approach - programming over spectacle.
Where it happens
The Old Town and Cowgate carry most of the late-night circuit, alongside a scattered handful of venues further out.
