The scene in Newcastle
World Headquarters grew out of club nights its founders ran through the 1980s and 90s, before becoming a venue in its own right - a rare example of a night outliving the venues it started in and eventually building its own. Riverside, a separate venue that ran from 1985 to 1999, hosted Nirvana's first show outside North America along with The Smiths, the Stone Roses and Happy Mondays, and is still talked about as a genuine loss to the city's alternative scene.
Newcastle's nightlife has always run wider than one genre - the Bigg Market and Osborne Road circuit carries the city's mainstream reputation, while WHQ's soul and house crowd has quietly kept its own thing going regardless of what's fashionable elsewhere.
Where it happens
The city centre carries most of the activity, with Osborne Road in Jesmond as the other main draw for a slightly different, more student-heavy crowd.
